Phase I Project of Changchun Rail Transit Line 5 Becomes Operational

The Phase I project of Changchun Rail Transit Line 5, for which UCD served as the general contractor for survey and design, opened to traffic on the morning of September 28. This is the second rail transit line that has been opened in Changchun this year. Previously, the Phase I project of Changchun Rail Transit Line 7, for which UCD also served as the general contractor for survey and design, became operational. The successive operation of the two lines has effectively enhanced Changchun’s public transportation capacity, injecting new impetus into the development of the city.

The first phase of Changchun Rail Transit Line 5 runs from Zhuoyue Street Station in the west to Dongdaqiao Station in the east, with alignment passing through Guigu Street, Qianjin Street, Huxi Road, Hongqi Street, Culture Square, People's Square, and Changchun Street. With a total length of 19.5 km, it has 18 underground stations (among which the Former Site Museum of Changchun Film Studio Station has been postponed for opening), including 8 transfer stations. The transfer network covers the main rail transit lines.

Hailed as Changchun's "golden convenience line and commercial vitality line," this new line will significantly alleviate traffic congestion on key road sections, such as Guigu Street, Qianjin Street, Hongqi Street, and Chongqing Road. Underground passages and integrated connection designs enable the seamless linkage between metro stations and along-the-line commercial complexes and accurately bind core business districts together, stimulating business vitality with rail passengers, delivering a one-stop experience for mobility, shopping and leisure, and facilitating the upgrading of the old urban area’s business districts. Concurrently, centered around stations, the line was built under the distinctive transit-oriented development (TOD) model. Rail transit construction empowers the high-quality development of commerce in Changchun.

Stations were decorated under the theme of "Cultural spring city, timeless Changchun - a train through the ages." The design team extracted the local cultural and historical symbols of Changchun and transformed them artistically. Through a collage approach, historical fragments and humanistic stories that bear the memories of the city were woven into the public spaces of metro stations, allowing passengers to experience Changchun’s century-old development trajectory during their trips.

Currently, three rail transit lines are under construction in Changchun, all of which are under the overall design responsibility of UCD. As China’s urban rail transit designer with the largest market share and the strongest comprehensive capabilities, UCD will leverage its industry-leading advantages to support the high-quality development of Changchun's rail transit construction.
