China’s First National Standard in English on Elderly-Oriented Urban Rail Transit Passes Review

Recently, the review draft of the General technical requirements for the configuration of elderly-oriented basic equipment and installations for the urban rail transit (English edition), led and compiled by UCD, successfully passed review. It is China’s first English-language national standard on elderly-oriented urban rail transit.

The standard systematically specifies configuration requirements for elderly-oriented equipment and installations, including access facilities, service equipment, and information communication equipment, along travel routes used by older passengers. It will promote international technical exchange and mutual learning in the field of elderly-oriented transportation and provide a Chinese approach and practical experience for reference in developing age-friendly transport systems worldwide. The standard is also of significant guiding value in enhancing China’s voice in international standardization activities on age-friendly rail transit and supporting standards development under the Belt and Road Initiative.

In addition, the standard will provide authoritative, compliance-oriented English-language support for Chinese urban rail transit companies expanding overseas, thus effectively reducing the costs of cross-border technical communication. By showcasing China’s mature age-friendly solutions, it will also help enhance the international competitiveness and brand influence of Chinese urban rail transit companies.
