The Full Operation of Nanjing Metro Line 5
On August 6, the northern section of Nanjing Metro Line 5 successfully started operation, marking the full operation of the aforesaid line where UCD is in charge of the design-build construction.
Nanjing Metro Line 5, a vital strategic artery passing through the main urban area of Nanjing, spans 37.4 kilometers from Jiyin Avenue Station to Fangjiaying Station. The completely underground route has 30 underground stations, including 16 interchange stations. Renowned for its intensive connectivity, this line is hailed as the "King of Interchange". Upon full operation, Nanjing Metro Line 5 will play an essential role in alleviating traffic pressure across the core area of Nanjing while enhancing connectivity and accessibility within the city's metro network.
During the project design, UCD has followed the philosophy of station-city integration. Multiple stations, including Sanshanjie and Fujianlu, are co-built with adjacent buildings. By means of co-constructing and sharing metro stations with surrounding pedestrian systems, bus transfers, and the urban built environment, the design effectively integrates urban infrastructure resources around the stations, advancing a unified and mutually beneficial blending of subway stations with their surrounding space, functions, and environment. It also adds elements of "cultural heritage preservation and historical culture". For example, archaeological relics unearthed during metro construction are subtly combined by establishing a cultural relic display area in the station hall of Fuzimiao Station, which creates a micro-exhibition platform showcasing the historical context of Jinling, the ancient capital. The station design covers the Qinhuai Lantern, a kind of intangible cultural heritage. Fuzimiao Station is brimming with splendidly colored glazed glass columns and dynamic lantern-shaped decorations, making Nanjing Metro Line 5 resemble an underground cultural gallery traversing the city.
