Guangzhou Metro Line 10 Comes into Operation

The Yangji East-Xilang section of the Guangzhou Metro Line 10, built by UCD, was officially put into operation on June 29. The Guangzhou Metro Line 10, the first most advanced level of fully automated train operation in Guangzhou, will form the "X-shaped" diagonal backbone with Line 12, further enhancing the urban rail transit network in the city's downtown areas, and driving the construction of "GBA on the rail" into a new stage.

Line 10, stretching in the southwest-northeast direction, covers a distance of 19.3 km with 13 stations and 1 metro depot. Its eastern section from Xilang to Yangji East spans 17.2 km with 12 stations, 5 of which are transfer stations. UCD undertook the task of building six stations, namely Xilang, Guanggang New Town (Huawei), Dongsha, Daganwei, Gongye Avenue (South), Dongxia South and Wufeng (exclusive). After overcoming numerous difficulties, it successfully completed the construction task.

China's first case of station renovation under the operation of the existing line. Xilang Station acts as a transfer station of Line 10 with the existing Line 1, Guangfo Line and Line 22. As Xilang Station serves a large number of passengers, the renovation project can only be carried out during the non-operational hours from 1:30 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. The pipeline layout in the station is complex. In the southern vehicle buffer zone, there are 20 different pipelines in each 60 m × 8 m track. In face of many challenges like complex pipeline layout, high passenger flow, restricted construction site and tight schedule, the project team overcame difficulties and completed the renovation of the existing railway station while ensuring operational safety. It successfully transferred the "dispatching and command rights, territorial management rights and equipment usage rights" of the entrance and exit passages within just two months.

Tunnel beneath the main fairway of the Pearl River. The Dongsha-Daganwei section of Line 10 tunnels beneath the main fairway of the Pearl River that measures 555 m wide and 9.7 m deep at the most. The waterway is very busy. The water level fluctuates greatly due to the rise and fall of the tides, and the excavation face of the tunnel is in hydraulic connection with the river water, leading to high risks and severe difficulties in the construction process. When shield machines excavated a tunnel underwater, the project team convened several rounds of expert reviews, organized emergency drills to prevent water and sand gushing, and took various control measures like risk classification during the construction process, in a bid to ensure the smooth excavation of the tunnel.

Largest station along Line 10. Huawei Station (Guanggang New Town Station) is the largest station along the entire line. The project team scientifically optimized the construction plan, used low reverse circulation drills, and removed soil and stones in the foundation pit in one side, skilfully avoiding the high-voltage wires on the north side of the station. The construction techniques of steel casing and vibratory bored piling significantly accelerated the construction of fender piles, ensuring the smooth and successful completion of the entire excavation process.

Line 10 further enhanced the urban rail transit network in the city's downtown areas. Line 10 seamlessly connects with Guangfo Line and Line 22, and allows transfers with multiple lines at key stations, including Caihong Bridge Station and Donghu Station. This further improves the urban rail transit structure characterized by a "ring + cross + X" layout in Guangzhou.
