UCD Wins 5 “Awards for Urban Rail Transit Science and Technology Progress”

Recently, UCD has reaped a bumper harvest winning 5 scientific and technological progress awards in the public-appraisal-based selection of "Awards for Urban Rail Transit Science and Technology Progress" launched by China Association of Metros in 2021. Among others, the "Multi-dimensional Integration Theory and Key Technology Research of Urban Rail Transit Planning", a research program completed with UCD as the bellwether, won the first prize.
By virtue of preliminary evaluation and re-evaluation by experts organized by the jury committee of "Awards for Urban Rail Transit Science and Technology Progress" under the China Association of Metros as well as examination and approval by the association’s reward committee, and through publicity online, a total of 33 achievements won the Awards for Urban Rail Transit Science and Technology Progress for the year from among 114 achievements presented for the evaluation. Two achievements, including the "Multi-dimensional Integration Theory and Key Technology Research of Urban Rail Transit Planning", a research program completed with UCD as the bellwether, and the "Safety Control Key Technology for Construction of New Subways under the Existing Ones", a program completed with UCD as a participator, won the first prize. And three other achievements, including the "Multi-operation-based Project Design and Practice of Smart Operation Management and Control Platform for Major Urban Rail Transit Line Networks", "Key Technologies and Application for Optimizing Coordinated Urban Rail Transit Operation and Improving Service Capability", "Innovation and Application of Urban Rail Transit AFC Line Network Integration System in Cloud Architecture", won second prize.
Rail transit is a major urban infrastructure, with its evaluation and decision-making system usually focused on engineering and technical factors, and is unable to meet the development requirements for an all-round integration with cities, laying bare such problems as layout of rail transit not fitting in with urban land utilization and distribution of residences and workplaces, stations not integrated with urban areas, lack of coordination with the comprehensive transport facilities, difficulty for passengers in entering stations for the ride and transfer. To meet the requirement for the high-quality and sustainable development of urban rail transit during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, realize the goal of "integration of rail transit and urban planning, interaction between existing line reconstruction and urban renewal, matching of rail transit operation to urban traffic characteristics, coordination of dynamic simulation of rail transit with urban multi-source data", UCD studied and developed "Urban Rail Transit Multi-dimensional Integration Evaluation System and Key Technologies".
Main Technical Innovations:
(1) Based on the AHP-ENTROPY-TOPSIS analysis and evaluation model, a multi-dimensional integration evaluation system of “three levels, six dimensions and thirty-six indicators”has been established for the first time and a quantitative evaluation method has been constructed to fill in domestic gaps. It has been popularized and applied in more than 10 cities in China and achieved good economic and social benefits.
(2) Based on the Node-Place-Ridership model, an evaluation system integrating existing line reconstruction and urban renewal has been constructed, and a comprehensive existing line reconstruction technology combining "split + capacity expansion + reutilization + new construction" has been pioneered. It has been applied to the opening, operation and transformation of Beijing Metro Line 1 and Batong Line and the capacity expansion of Line 13, thus realizing the successful transformation of Metro Line 1, first subway line of New China, to improve the integration relationship with the city. , pioneering the "split + capacity expansion" The comprehensive transportation capacity enhancement technology combining "split + capacity expansion + reutilization + new construction" has been pioneered, creating a new milestone in the history of urban rail transit development in China.
(3) Technology for optimizing the network-orineted operation and organization of multi-dimensional integration of rails and cities and technology for optimizing the organization of passenger and cargo transportation to integrate with industrial economy have been set forth for the first time. The load balancing method for rail transit based on major networked operation technologies such as multi-passage, multi-grouping, express and slow trains, and over-track operation, has been put forward, breaking through the drawback of existing research methods being mostly confined to a single line. The rail transit freight value-added service model has been proposed, which has promoted the practical application of the super-normal and super-strong operation of subways in Beijing during the epidemic period and the technology for organizing the luggage consignment on the Daxing Airport Line.
(4) The multi-source big data application technology for multi-dimensional integration evaluation has been established for the first time, and the urban rail transit dynamic simulation platform has been developed to realize the comprehensive evaluation application of rail transit multi-dimensional integration. The project has obtained 6 national invention patents, 5 software copyrights, formed 1 national standard, 1 Beijing municipal standard and 1 Xiong’an standard, and published 1 monograph. The technological innovation from the project has been popularized and applied to more than 180 projects in more than 40 cities in China, and the direct economic benefit equivalent to the project income contributed by the technological innovation has exceeded 300 million yuan, with the social benefit exceeding 3 billion yuan, winning wide acclaim and instructions for many times from leaders like Cai Qi, secretary of Beijing municipal Party committee,. Wang Menghui, minister of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, Wang Zhiqing and Liu Xiaoming, vice ministers of Ministry of Transport, etc.
In 2021, China Association of Metros organized and convened a project-related scientific and technological achievements evaluation meeting. The expert team consisting of 9 renowned experts headed by Shi Zhongheng, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, were of the opinion that the research achievements have reached the international leading level on the whole and can provide technical support for the high-quality and sustainable development of rail transit and cities.
