Congratulations to UCD Experts on Winning the Title of “Admirable Persons of China Metro throughout 50 Years”

Endure great hardships to blaze trails in mountains and forests, and keep forging ahead to create resplendence. Starting from the trial operation of Beijing Metro Line 1 on October 1, 1969, the operation of China's subways has been carried out for 50 years. To select and commend vanguards and paragons of the urban rail transit industry to lead the whole industry to pay tribute to and model themselves on the paragons, from the end of March of 2019 onward, the China Urban Rail Transit Association has launched the campaign of choosing “Admirable Persons of China Metro throughout 50 Years”.

In the past few months, through the recommendation of various units of the urban rail transit industry, and after such procedures as initial examination, selection, review, the election board that consists of the members of the selection leading group and the academic committees, branches (sub-branches) of the association and representatives of the directly affiliated institutions, underwent secret ballot to choose the admirable persons and, upon approval by the selection leading group, 50 candidates have been selected as “Admirable Persons of China Metro throughout 50 Years”. Among them, UCD’s three experts have been selected (the serial number of experts is ranked according to the number of votes). The award ceremony will be held in Guangzhou in September.

01 Shi Zhongheng, aged 89, UCD’s chief advisor, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, who has worked for 60 years. As the first postgraduate student sent to the Soviet Union to study in the subway sector, he has always shouldered the historical mission of developing China's urban rail transit industry, guided the construction of China's first subway, and has been the first one to apply the construction technology of “ steel tube-reinforced concrete column”. Ever since, the shallow burial scheme has been adopted for the design and construction of urban rail transit projects in China. Shi Zhongheng has witnessed and participated in a great number of major events and big projects in the history of rail transit industry and has created many “Firsts” in the history of rail transit industry in China. He presided over such research subjects as “Issues Concerning the Reduction of Subway Construction Cost and Project Construction Management”, which guided the sound development of urban rail transit planning and construction. He instructed in many technological innovations and has done his best to support the construction of demonstration projects with independent intellectual property rights. He presided over the edition of professional teaching materials, books and standards, and has cultivated a number of excellent subway professionals, thus facilitating great progress in China’s technological and educational undertakings. In 1999, he was elected academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. In 2004, “Comprehensive Transport Development Strategy for Big Cities and Key Technology Research”, a state-level medium- and long-term scientific and technological plan presided over by Shi Zhongheng, won “Individual Outstanding Contribution Award”. In 2008, Shi Zhongheng won the title of “Advisor with Outstanding Contribution” issued by Beijing Municipal Planning Commission.

10 Shen Jingyan, aged 80, UCD’s advisory director who has worked for 54 years. He has long stood fast to the production line and has participated in preliminary research, design, planning, consulting and research work concerning rail transit construction for many cities. He dares to be the person in charge of the first subway line of various cities to take charge of overall design and projects to face up to all challenges and overcome difficulties, and has accumulated a great deal of technological innovation achievements；he has created many “Firsts” in the design and planning field of the rail transit industry in China. His first book of Feasibility Study won first prize issued by Beijing for design excellence, and his first book of Overall Design opened up an example and paradigm for the “overall design” of subways and light rails in China. His first book of Net Planning has escalated the concept for the networking of design, construction and operation of rail transit and has made a great leap forward from single-line design to networking design. His first book of Code for Urban Rail Transit Engineering Construction has put forth unified standards for the traffic levels, pattern classification, operating functions, system layout and project scale of the rail transit. In 1992, he won the title of “Advanced Army Cadre Transferred to Civil Work of Beijing” conferred by the Beijing Municipal People’s Government. In 1999, he won “Special Government Allowance” awarded by the State Council, and many of his technological achievements have won national, provincial and municipal awards.

20Yang Xiuren, aged 55, UCD’s chief engineer who has worked for 33 years. He has opened up and guided the development orientation for the green and safety urban rail transit construction technology. “Assembly-type Station” is a construction method for subway stations of the new generation and is the key technology for research and development in China’s 13th Five-Year Plan period；“fabricated track” has become the development trend；“U-shape girder elevated subway line” has witnessed the harmonious co-existence of aestheticism, economy, environmental protection and the urban humanity；and “safety and risk control” has effectively solved the problems such as frequently occurring construction accidents. Many of his significant project designs have lived up to the international advanced levels or domestic leading levels. 25 projects have won national, provincial and ministerial excellent design awards. Yang Xiuren has a strong sense of social responsibility and has taken the development of the industry as his own mission. He has applied himself to technology foundation construction beneficial to the industry and has compiled and participated in the compilation of 19 copies of Standards. In 2013, he became the expert enjoying the special allowance of the State Council. In 2015, he was selected as one of technology talents with outstanding contribution of Beijing. In 2016, he became the national engineering survey and design master. In 2017, he won the title of Beijing Scholar. In 2018, he became an outstanding high-level innovation and business startup person of Beijing.

In the meantime, UCD’s advisor and former deputy chief engineer He Changjun has also been elected one of “Admirable Persons of China Metro throughout 50 Years”.

37 He Changjun, aged 84, UCD’s engineering company’s advisor and UCD’s former deputy chief engineer, standing deputy commander of Beijing Metro Headquarters and chief engineer of the engineering company. He took part in the design of Beijing’s metro line 1(line 401), first-ever subway line of China, and realized the official construction of the line on July 1st, 1965. When he acted as the standing commander and chief engineer of UCD’s metro headquarters, he led the construction and completion of Guomao Station (included) and the four stations eastward, four sections and car depot of Bawangfen Metro Station of 1.2 million square meters, ensuring the scheduled traffic opening of the multiple track 8. Though retired, he has stuck to the metro technology work，and has compiled books about metro construction work rules and risk prevention teaching materials. He was one of the major examiners of the national metro codes, and cultivated metro construction personnel. He penetrated into the construction sites, participated in the inspection of metro accidents and accident handling work, contributing wisdom and sweat for his loved rail transit career. The modified bituminous sheet material and coating machine won second prize of scientific and technological progress of Beijing. Horizontal freezing reinforcement technology of underground tunnel excavation won third prize of scientific and technological progress of Beijing.
